Our lifespans are longer than ever. And yet, TOO OFTEN older adults are put (or put themselves) “out to pasture,” merely existing instead of truly living. Meanwhile, we’ve come to treat natural stages of decline and death as medical dilemmas, to be dreaded and avoided. How shall we transform the above? How shall we consider losses of former status and identity, reframing our goals towards mindful living and spiritual eldering? How shall we effectively disseminate perennial wisdom into an ever-evolving society? And how shall we respect the natural lifecycle, using the latter stages of physical life to contemplate legacy and eternity?

Rabbi Seth Stander is Community Aging Specialist of HHCI CARES (Caregiving, Aging, Resilience, Education, and Spirituality). Seth connects community members with resources related to caregiving, aging in place, long-term care facility placement, advanced care planning, and more. Additionally, Seth facilitates caregiver/grief/ethical support for individuals/couples/families. Finally, Seth teaches HHCI CARES’ “Aging with Grace” series and periodic “Lunch and Learn” sessions. Seth attended the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where he was ordained in 1999. He has served as congregational rabbi, chaplain, and long-term care ombudsman.
