What does it mean to carry Jerusalem with us wherever we go? Rabbi Oren Hayon shares the story of the ancient Jewish community of Isfahan in Iran, whose ancestors wandered from Jerusalem until they found soil and water that felt like home again. Drawing on a 10th‑century Persian legend, he explores how Jews have always carried “vials of earth and water” from our past — our memories, teachings, music, family recipes, and sacred stories — as a spiritual compass in times of exile, danger, and change. On this “in‑between” Shabbat, between Yom HaShoah and Yom HaAtzma’ut, Rabbi Hayon reflects on how Jewish identity is forged between devastation and renewal, and how every generation chooses what we will carry forward to build a more just and hopeful world.
