Your tour educator, Ronnie Ludwin, brings passion and local insight to every step of the journey. Here he is sharing the vibrant and meaningful murals inside Charleston’s Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim.
Our walking tour will take us into hidden courtyards and alleys, revealing pieces of Charleston’s Jewish past, including the Hebrew Orphan Society building, which once served as a synagogue.
We will also visit some of Charleston’s most iconic sites, such as the colorful homes of Rainbow Row, making sure you experience the city’s character along the way.
During our behind-the-scenes visit to the Jewish Heritage Collection with Dr. Max Daniel, we will see historic documents and artifacts, including this Coat of Arms from an influential Sephardic family in the 1700s.
KKBE is one of Charleston’s finest architectural landmarks. Its Greek Revival exterior and Roman Revival interior blend together in a striking and unique design we will explore.
We will welcome Shabbat together in KKBE’s 1840 Sanctuary, a special evening filled with music, history, and joyful community.
We will enjoy a special Shabbat dinner at Muse Restaurant, housed in a historic 1858 building. We will be joined by owner Donnie, who will share his family’s Holocaust survival story and his bright, welcoming personality.
At Hobcaw Barony, we will learn the complex story of plantation life by visiting sites such as a slave church and preserved cabins, and we will also hear about Bernard and Belle Baruch’s conservation legacy.
Inside Georgetown’s Beth Elohim synagogue, we will gain insight into Jewish communal life in a small Southern town and hear the story of the dedicated congregation that built and sustained it.
In the Beth Elohim Cemetery in Georgetown, Dr. Rosengarten will guide us through the unique history of this small coastal Jewish community. We will learn about families such as the Kaminskis and uncover the stories and symbolism found in the headstones.
