The Only Woman in the Room, by Marie Benedict, is a historical fiction novel based loosely on the life of the legendary screen actress Hedy Lamarr. Born in Vienna, her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to her marriage to an Austrian arms dealer. She overheard the Third Reich’s plans while at her husband’s side and soon after devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle in Austria. The whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood, and she became screen star Hedy Lamarr. She became known not only for her beauty, but as an inventor who helped this country fight the Nazis.
