In this moving reflection, Rabbi Josh Fixler remembers his teacher, Rabbi Dr. Andrea Weiss, co-editor of The Torah: A Women’s Commentary and a towering voice of Torah, justice, and chesed. He shares stories from Hebrew Union College, the “multivocality” vision behind “the green book,” and the profound impact this groundbreaking commentary has had on generations of students—especially women who finally felt included in the Torah conversation.
Rabbi Fixler also reflects on Rabbi Weiss’s work lifting up diverse voices through the “American Values and Religious Voices” letter-writing campaign, and on how she turned to the Hebrew Bible for moral clarity in moments of national turmoil. The reflection culminates in Rabbi Weiss’s own teaching on Exodus 15 and the miracle of transforming bitter waters into sweet, along with the Psalms that sustained her during her illness.
May the Torah she taught and the Torah she lived continue to echo through her students, her scholarship, and all who turn to her work for strength and courage.
