Support for Emanu El Members During the Ongoing Government Shutdown

Dear friends,

In recent days, many members of our large and diverse congregational community have found themselves affected by the ongoing government shutdown. We are aware that a number of temple members employed by the federal government are working to make ends meet despite missed paychecks, while others are struggling due to disruptions in SNAP benefits and other government programs. If you or your family are worried or struggling during these uncertain times, we want to remind you that Emanu El is here to support you.

If you or your loved ones are facing these or other similar difficulties, we want to encourage you to reach out to our clergy team. Our rabbis and cantor can support you with confidential emotional and spiritual assistance, guidance on available resources, and financial support. Also, thanks to our partnership with the Alexander JFS, our onsite Shalva Project case manager and social work clinician are also available to assist.

Additionally, thanks to your generosity during the High Holy Days, Emanu El will soon distribute funds raised through the annual Hunger Fund Appeal to area organizations providing on-the-ground assistance to individuals and families in need. And through our ongoing partnerships with Kids’ Meals and SEARCH, we are working together to fight hunger throughout our community. If you have non-perishable food items to contribute, we encourage you to bring them to temple; collection bins are in the Rotunda, North Lobby, and at the School Entrance. Sisterhood will also begin its own collection of food in November.

During difficult times, we can find reassurance and comfort in the nearness of a supportive community like Emanu El. I’m grateful for the generosity that so many of you continue to demonstrate, and thankful for our congregation’s ability to help those in need – here within our synagogue community and beyond its walls as well.

With many thanks and with every blessing,

Rabbi Oren J. Hayon
