Hearing the Song of Freedom: Shabbat Shirah and the Soundtrack of Our Judaism

Shabbat Worship
Date

Feb. 2, 2026

Location

Barish Sanctuary . Proler Chapel

Rabbi Pam Silk shares a vivid childhood memory of a Wile E. Coyote cartoon to teach how music changes not just what we see, but what we feel. From classical music in a fourth-grade classroom to Shirat Hayam, the Song of the Sea in Parashat B’shalach, she explores how melody imprints words on our hearts and becomes the soundtrack of our Judaism. Drawing on the leadership of Moses, Miriam, and our ancestors, Rabbi Silk reflects on how singing together bridges generations, strengthens community, and keeps the glow of liberation alive. As we await a time of lasting peace and the ultimate Shir Chadash, a new song of redemption, we are called to work, to hope — and to sing — for freedom for all who are not yet free.
