On Kol Nidre, Rabbi Oren Hayon explores a striking invitation in the Yom Kippur liturgy: permission “to pray together with the transgressors.” What does it mean to belong to a people that cannot simply cast out its most difficult members—or allow anyone to be written out of the story? Drawing on the revival of modern Hebrew, Jewish law, Torah, and the enduring image of a bundle of reeds made stronger together, Rabbi Hayon reflects on Jewish peoplehood as a shared, sometimes challenging, but unbreakable bond. This sermon is an invitation to affirm connection without surrendering to tribalism; to practice accountability with humility; and to recognize that the strength of Jewish community comes not from uniformity, but from our willingness to remain bound to one another as we work to repair what is broken.
