Juneteenth Celebration

Thursday, June 10, 2021 30 Sivan 5781

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Congregation Emanu El is partnering with ADL Texas for its inaugural Juneteenth Celebration featuring keynote speaker Kelly Elaine Navies, lead curator and oral historian at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C.

Navies has also served as oral historian and Special Collections librarian with the Washington D.C. Public Library system. We are honored to have her share the rich history of Juneteenth and how its significance illustrates the hard-fought battle for equality and justice for African Americans.

Juneteenth is the oldest holiday commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States; specifically, when the word of freedom made its way to Texas. Emanu El is one of several dozen partners taking part in this important recognition of Texas heritage and American history.
