Jewish Geography Zoom Racing

Sunday, July 12, 2020 20 Tammuz 5780

8:00 PM - 9:30 PMonline

The quarantine has created many phenomena but one that has been prevalent in the Jewish virtual space has been "Jewish Geography Zoom Racing" (JGZR) created by Micah Hart.

Join us on the Congregation Emanu El Facebook page or Proler Chapel Streaming video page as Rabbi Oren Hayon takes part in the competition and represents our congregation against Rabbi Sari Laufer of Stephen Wise Temple in Los Angeles.

This is a continuation of a friendly rivalry between the two synagogues and represents the first JGZR competition between a pair of synagogues to date.

Regular episodes of JGZR are streamed live every Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. on their Facebook page for "Campfires and Color Wars," which is a storytelling podcast Hart hosts about summer camp memories.

The game will begin when the name of the "The Chosen One" is disclosed, then the race is on to see who can get that person to join the Zoom call first.

Rather than simply texting their friends to ask if they know "The Chosen One," they have to persuade each person to join a Zoom call. No information can be exchanged except over Zoom. Each person brings another onto the Zoom call, until the winner finds “The Chosen One.”

Congregation Emanu El's friendly rivalry with Stephen Wise dates to the 2017 World Series won by the Houston Astros in seven games over the Los Angeles Dodgers. During a wager made during the World Series, the two synagogues raised awareness for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and the devasting fire that leveled the Union for Reform Judaism’s Camp Newman in California.

No registration is required to watch the JGZR competition.
