Israel & The Olympics: The Israeli 'Cool Runnings' Story

Thursday, July 22, 2021 13 Av 5781

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Get in the Olympic spirit as Congregation Emanu El and HCRJ pair up to host former Israeli bobsledder David Greaves and 2018 Winter Olympic Israel Olympic skeleton assistant coach Larry Sidney.

Just a day before the 2021 Summer Olympics begin in Japan, we will learn about Israel's involvement in the sports of bobsled and skeleton, as well as current training and competition underway in an effort to land Israel's bobsled and skeleton teams a spot in the 2022 Winter Olympics.

In the early 2000's, Greaves, together with three other American Jews - a former Air Force pilot, a two-time NFL Super Bowl champion and a security tech expert - made aliyah and represented Israel in bobsled, qualifying Israel for two World Championships.

Nearly 20 years later, the hard work and perseverance paid off as Israel qualified its first athlete in a sliding sport as AJ Edelman represented the country in the sport of skeleton.
