EE75 Social Action: Emergency Aid Coalition

Sunday, October 27, 2019 28 Tishrei 5780

10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
The Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC) is an interfaith organization that provides temporary assistance with food, clothing and other basic needs, with an emphasis on serving workers in poverty.

Chairs: Rachael Tobor & Adina Cohen

We will be offering both an off-site and an on-campus project to benefit the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC).

Founded in 1983, with Emanu El as one of its charter participants under the leadership of Rabbi Roy Walter, EAC is an interfaith organization that collaborates to provide temporary assistance in the form of clothing, food and other basic needs, with an emphasis on serving the working poor. Each year, they help more than 50,000 individuals living on the edge of poverty, serving those in need in Houston’s inner city and Midtown neighborhoods.

Off-Site Activity
10:00 a.m.

Families will have a chance to grocery shop and purchase food staples with their children at HEB to restock the EAC pantry. This is a beautiful lesson for our children about budgeting and sharing. We will meet at HEB with a designated grocery list and food voucher amount at 10 am – HEB. A store location will be sent to those who choose this option. We will then caravan to EAC for food sorting and pantry re-stocking and help serve lunches to their clients at 5401 Fannin (enter off of San Jacinto, off of Calumet).

On-Site Activity
12:30 p.m.

We will meet at the synagogue to:

  • sort shoe & clothing donations by size and gender for the EAC clothing closet
  • assemble their letters for their Thanksgiving Annual Fund mailer
  • package washcloth/soap packets for their clients & decorate with inspirational notes

We are currently collecting men's shoes for EAC. Please let us make your clean-outs and de-clutter sessions more convenient and meaningful. EAC also needs jackets/coats, men’s pants, plus-sized women’s clothes and blankets. We have collection tubs in the Rotunda.
