American Idol / A Melton Class taught by Rabbi Hayon

Congregation Emanu El, in collaboration with the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston and created by the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning, will offer a class entitled “American Idol” taught by Rabbi Hayon.

The prohibition on idol-worship has always been a central idea in Judaism. But what exactly does this mean in today’s world, where the practice of worshiping inanimate objects is very rare?

Together, we will explore a wide array of sources, from the Bible to Jewish law codes to contemporary examples of “idolizing” athletes and celebrities. No background in Jewish studies is required, but you must come equipped with an open mind and a sense of curiosity!

The class will run seven weeks starting on Thursday, January 27 and concluding on Thursday, March 10.
