Mitzvah Day

Mitzvah Accomplished!
Mitzvah Day 2009 was an overwhelming success! Since 1992, Mitzvah Day is the one day each year when we go out as an entire congregation into the Houston community to make a difference in the lives of others. On Sunday, November 15, 2009, over 750 congregants gathered to put their faith into action and worked on nearly thirty projects, affecting the lives of over 4,000 individuals.

This year’s theme was Caring for Each Other, Caring for Our Earth, which was embodied in the following projects performed both at Emanu El and at various offsite locations:
• Prepared and served meals to over 2500 individuals
• Painted murals to brighten the walls of Harris County Hospital District pediatric and geriatric wards
• Hosted over 300 disadvantaged kids at Zuma Fun Center
• Planted a biblical garden to be maintained by students
• Knitted squares and assembled afghans for various agencies
• Decorated holiday cards for DePelchin Children’s and military personnel
• Sorted clothes and food for distribution to needy people in our community
If you took pictures, please send them to mitzvahday@emanuelhouston.org so that we can chronicle the day.
